365 Things to do in Seattle WA – Day 8 Gas Works Park
History: Gas Works Park is a 20 acre point on Lake Union. It was cleared in 1906 in order to construct a plant to manufacture gas from coal and was later converted to crude oil. Import of natural gas in the 1950′s made the plant obsolete. The city acquired the site for a park in 1962 and it was opened to the public in 1975. The boiler house has been converted to a picnic shelter with tables, fire grills and an open area. (Thanks to Seattle Parks & Rec for history information).
You’ll find a wonderful view of Lake Union and Downtown Seattle including the Space Needle. If you’re lucky you’ll see float planes land and take off as well (I mention this in the video as one was landing but I called it a Sea Plane…). You’ll see people flying kites, playing frisbee with their dogs or friends, kids running around, people laying out in the Summer and on the 4th of July it will be so jammed packed to watch the fire work show over Lake Union. Check it out!
